Solana - Sora-na (English spelling) José Gutiérrez Solana

Spanish painter and writer. Born and died in Madrid. Resonating with the ideas of the "Generation of '98" that was formed following the defeat in the Spanish-American War, he wrote many literary works, such as "Dark Spain" and "Scenes and Customs of Madrid," in which he sharply described the customs of the Spanish people. His self-taught paintings were in line with these literary works, depicting dark and tragic folk themes in dark tones that sometimes splash blood-like red or mysterious green, establishing a style that could be called Spanish Expressionism, which is also reminiscent of Goya's "Black Paintings." He was a representative of the Spanish Castilian School in the first half of the 20th century. His works include "The Visit of the Bishop" (1926) and "March of Death" (1930, Madrid Museum of Modern Art).

スペインの画家、文筆家。マドリードに生まれ、同地に没。アメリカ・スペイン戦争の敗北を契機に形成された「98年の世代」の思想に共鳴、『暗いスペイン』『マドリードの情景と風俗』など数多くの文学作品をも著し、スペインの民衆風俗を鋭い筆致で描写した。独学の絵画も、そうした文学作品と軌を一にし、暗く悲惨な民衆的主題を、ときに血のような赤や不思議な緑のほとばしる暗い色調で描き、ゴヤの「黒い絵」にも通じるスペイン的表現主義ともよぶべき作風を確立、20世紀前半のスペイン・カスティーリャ派を代表した。『司教の訪問』（1926）、『死の行進』（1930・マドリード近代美術館）などの作品がある。
