A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Ophiopogonidae in the class Hydrozoa. It is widely distributed worldwide and is commonly found off the coast of Japan. It attaches to seaweed and other things in shallow waters. The hydrostalk is about 1-2 cm tall. The periderm under the stalk of the hydropod is thick. The hydropods are cup-shaped with rounded, smooth edges, and occur alternately on the left and right sides of the hydropod. The reproductive body is deep, urn-shaped, and occurs on the upper side of the stalk that bears the hydropod, with several found on each hydrostalk. Closely related species include O. dichotoma and O. plana , the former of which grows on rocks and other things in shallow waters from Hokkaido to central Honshu, forming colonies about 2 cm tall.
