Kaizaiku (English) Winged everlasting

Japanese: カイザイク（英語表記）winged everlasting

An annual plant of the Asteraceae family native to Australia. In summer, it produces flower heads wrapped in dry involucres at the top of the stem. The stems are characterized by wing-like protrusions. The ones sold by florists as "Kaizai-ku" are actually the horticultural variety Helichrysum bracteatum Andr. (English name: strawflower), a different genus of the Asteraceae family also native to Australia, called "Emperor Shell Craft" (illustration). This plant is 80-90cm tall. It branches roughly and produces solitary flower heads at the ends of the branches in summer.

オーストラリア原産のキク科の一年草。夏季に乾質の総苞に包まれた頭状花序を茎頂につける。茎には翼状の突出があることが特徴である。　花屋などでカイザイクと名づけて売っているものは，やはりオーストラリア原産のキク科の別属植物であるムギワラギクHelichrysum bracteatum Andr.(英名strawflower)から改良された園芸品の帝王貝細工（イラスト）である。これは草丈80～90cm。粗く枝を分けて夏には枝先に頭状花を単生する。
