Palau is an island in the central part of the Palau archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean, with an area of 8 km2 and a population of 10,000 (1990). It is connected to Babeltuap (Babeldaob) island to the north by a bridge. In the past, Aibador, the chief of Koror, wielded power as one of the two major chiefs, along with Likurai, the chief of Malukiyok on Babeltuap island. During the Japanese mandate period after World War I, the South Seas Office was established here, and it became the center of administration of the South Seas Islands, with the Japanese population exceeding the Palauan population. It is currently the capital of the Republic of Palau, and is home to the national parliament, government offices, and courts. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
