A marriage system that prohibits members of a group from choosing a spouse from within the group. Groups in which exogamy is practiced include kinship groups, regional groups, residential groups, and hierarchical groups. The most common form is exogamy among kinship groups, particularly in unilineal groups such as lineages and clans, as well as in polygamists and half tribes. The practice of not marrying within the same sex is also a form of exogamy. There are various explanations for the origin and significance of exogamy, but the significance of its extension of the incest taboo to a specific area and its significance in forming solidarity through marriage with an outside group cannot be ignored.
