The capital of the province of Limburg, located in northeastern Belgium and bordering the Netherlands. Population 68,771 (2002). It is located on the left bank of the Demel River, which flows northwest along the southern edge of the Kempen (Kampine) plateau. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a key transportation and commercial location, but since the beginning of the 20th century, coalfields in the east were developed and the city has grown rapidly. In addition to traditional industries such as gin brewing and tobacco manufacturing, metal processing is carried out and a large-scale electronics industry has also developed. In the vast Bokrijk provincial estate nearby, there is a nature reserve and the Kempen (Kampine) Folk House Museum.
