Hogen Rebellion

A civil war at the end of the Heian period. Emperor Toba and the retired Emperor Sutoku were at odds over the succession to the throne, but when Emperor Goshirakawa ascended to the throne in 1155, the retired emperor's dissatisfaction grew. In addition, within the regent family, the brothers Fujiwara Tadamichi and Yorinaga were fighting for the position of regent and clan head. When the retired emperor died in 1156 (the first year of the Hogen era), the retired emperor allied with Yorinaga and invited samurai including Minamoto no Tameyoshi, Tametomo, and Taira no Tadamasa to attack Emperor Goshirakawa and regent Tadamichi. The imperial side defeated the retired emperor's side with the troops of Tameyoshi's son Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Tadamasa's nephew Taira no Kiyomori, and the retired emperor was exiled to Sanuki, Yorinaga was killed in battle, and Tameyoshi and others were beheaded. 平安末期の内乱。鳥羽法皇と崇徳(すとく)上皇とは皇位継承をめぐって対立していたが，1155年後白河天皇が即位すると上皇の不満は高まった。また摂関家では藤原忠通・頼長の兄弟が関白・氏長者(うじのちょうじゃ)を争っていた。1156年（保元１年）法皇が死ぬと，上皇は頼長と結んで源為義(ためよし)・為朝・平忠正らの武士を招き，後白河天皇，関白忠通を討とうとした。天皇方は為義の子源義朝，忠正の甥(おい)平清盛らの兵をもって上皇方を破り，上皇は讃岐(さぬき)に配流，頼長は戦死，為義らは斬られた。この乱は武士が中央政界に進出する契機となった。→平治の乱
