Devil's Dictionary

...His cynicism is displayed in The Cynic's Glossary (1906, later expanded as The Devil's Dictionary, 1911), which is still read today, but considering that he was once a successful journalist in San Francisco and London, and even published a 12-volume collection of his works (1909-12) that he edited himself during his lifetime, it is sad that his works other than these two are not read much today. Ryunosuke Akutagawa was sympathetic to Bierce from an early stage and introduced him to Japan, probably because he saw in him qualities similar to his own.
