C ₄ H ₁₀ (58.12). CH ₃ (CH ₂ ) ₂ CH ₃ . A saturated hydrocarbon with four carbon atoms bonded in a straight chain. It is often called n -butane to distinguish it from its isomer, isobutane. It is also used as a general term for the hydrocarbons with the general formula C ₄ H ₁₀ , namely butane and isobutane. A component of wet natural gas. It is contained in the cracked gas of petroleum hydrocarbons. In the laboratory, it can be synthesized from ethyl iodide and sodium. In industry, it is separated from the cracked gas and naphtha by low-temperature fractional distillation. There are two rotational isomers, the gauche type and the more stable trans type, depending on the relative positions of the methyl groups at both ends of the carbon chain. A colorless gas with a peculiar odor. Melting point -138.35 °C, boiling point -0.50 °C. Explosive range 1.9 to 8.4 vol.%. It is easily liquefied and easily soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. It is chemically stable. It is used as a component of liquefied petroleum gas and as fuel for household gas lighters. It can be converted to isobutene by isomerization and dehydrogenation. C₄H₁₀(58.12)．CH₃(CH₂)₂CH₃．4個の炭素原子が直鎖状に結合した飽和炭化水素で，異性体であるイソブタンと区別して，n-ブタンとよぶことも多い．また，一般式C₄H₁₀で表される炭化水素，すなわちブタンおよびイソブタンの総称としても用いられる．湿性天然ガスの一成分．石油系炭化水素の分解ガスに含まれる．実験室的には，ヨウ化エチルとナトリウムから合成できる．工業的には，上記分解ガスおよびナフサから低温分留法などによって分離される．炭素鎖両末端のメチル基の相対的位置によりゴーシュ形と，より安定なトランス形の二つの回転異性体が存在する．特異臭をもつ無色の気体．融点－138.35 ℃，沸点－0.50 ℃．爆発範囲1.9～8.4体積％．容易に液化し，炭化水素系溶剤に易溶．化学的には安定である．液化石油ガスの成分として，家庭用およびガスライターの燃料に用いられる．異性化・脱水素によりイソブテンに転化できる．[CAS 106-97-8]
