It is the sub-capital of the Saône-et-Loire department in central-eastern France. It has a population of 16,419 (1999). It is 82 km northwest of Mâcon. It has an amphitheater and Roman ruins, including the Porte Saint-André and the Porte d'Arlux. It is famous for its architecture and sculptures in the 12th-century Abbey of Saint-Lazare. It produces textiles, carpets, machinery, and heating equipment. Called Augustodunum by the Romans, it was a center of commerce and learning. It was frequently attacked by foreigners from the early 5th century until the 9th century, when it lost importance.
