…Afterwards, having been taught military arts and music by Amphitryon and others, he grew into a fine young man, and his first feat was the slaying of a lion on Mount Cithaeron, south of Thebes. He wore the lion's skin and made the lion's head with its mouth open a helmet. He then defeated the king of Orchomenus, from whom Thebes was obliged to pay annual tribute, and in return received the princess Megara as a wife from the Theban king Kreōn. A few years later, he was driven mad by Hera and killed the children he had with Megara. He left his native land, and after being atoned for in a neighboring country, he went to Delphi to consult the oracle of Apollo. …
