An evergreen small tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 3-7 meters. The leaves are alternate, 1-1.5 cm long, simple, oblong, 5-10 cm long, with fine serrated edges. They are leathery and shiny, with no hairs on the surface. In May and June, numerous white 5-petal flowers, each about 8 mm in diameter, bloom at the ends of the branches. There are 20 stamens, two pistil styles, and a hairy ovary with two lobes that are semi-subordinate. The fruit is pear-shaped, elliptical, about 5 mm in diameter, and ripens red. It grows in the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Shizuoka Prefecture, but is often planted as a garden tree or hedge, and is also found in Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. It is also known as Akamemochi (red memochi) because the new leaves are red. P. serratifolia (Desf.) Kalkman ( P. serrulata Rindl.) has larger leaves with a rounded base than P. serratifolia. It is distributed in Okinawa, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and mainland China, and is also cultivated. Its Chinese name is Shinan, and since this character was mistakenly used for Rhododendron in ancient Japan, it is still commonly used today as the kanji name for Rhododendron. There are about 60 species in the P. serratifolia genus, distributed mainly from the Himalayas to Japan, and occasionally found in Sumatra, North America, and Central America. The ovary is semi-inferior, with the lower part of the two carpels fused together and the upper part separate. [Naohiro Naruhashi December 13, 2019] In May and June, many white flowers bloom at the ends of the branches. They are often planted as garden trees or hedges, and are also called akamemochi (red memochi) because many of their new leaves are reddish. ©Seishohmaru "> Photinia photinia Pyrinae subfamily Semi-superficial ovary ©Shogakukan "> Photinia flower (morphology) Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
Kalkman(P. serrulata Rindl.)
