Ernst Lubitsch

German, later American, film director. Born in Berlin. After gaining stage experience under Reinhardt, he entered the film world as a comedian in 1913. He became a director the following year and gained fame abroad with historical dramas such as "Passion" (1919). In 1923, he was invited to the United States. His comedy, centered on sophistication, featured in "The Philosophy of Marriage" (1924), which depicted the infidelity and schemes of upper-class Viennese men and women, and had a major impact on the development of Hollywood comedy. Even after the advent of talkies, he established the operetta film genre with innovative techniques such as "The Love Parade" (1929) and "The Merry Lieutenant" (1931), and entertained audiences with his unique and sophisticated visual expression, known as the "Lubitsch touch," in other comedies. He was good at making the most of the unique qualities of big stars such as Maurice Chevalier, and his films include Dietrich's ``Angel'' (1937), Cooper and Colbert's ``Bluebeard and the Eighth Wife'' (1938), and Garbo's ``Ninotchka'' (1939).

ドイツのちにアメリカの映画監督。ベルリン生まれ。ラインハルトのもとで舞台経験を積み、1913年喜劇俳優として映画界に入る。翌年監督となり、『パッション』（1919）などの歴史劇で国外にも名声をはせる。1923年招かれて渡米。ウィーン上流階級男女の浮気な恋やたくらみを描いた『結婚哲学』（1924）でソフィスティケーションを主調とするコメディを展開、ハリウッド喜劇の発展に大きな影響を与えた。トーキーに入っても斬新(ざんしん)な技法で『ラヴ・パレイド』（1929）、『陽気な中尉さん』（1931）などのオペレッタ映画をジャンルとして確立、他の喜劇でも「ルビッチ・タッチ」とよばれる独自の洗練された映像表現で観客を楽しませた。モーリス・シュバリエをはじめ大スターの持ち味を生かすのがうまく、ディートリヒの『天使』（1937）、クーパーとコルベールの『青髯(あおひげ)八人目の妻』（1938）、ガルボの『ニノチカ』（1939）などがある。
