… In the first half of the period, that is, before the Second World War, the movement was centered on the Pan-African Conference. First, in 1900, the Pan-African Conference was held in London at the suggestion of Henry Sylvester-Williams, an African lawyer from Trinidad, and protested against the invasion of Africa by Western colonialism and racial discrimination in the name of the conference. The significance of this conference is generally said to be that it was the first to organize African (or African) internationalism and to have made the term Pan-African known to the world, but it is also noteworthy that it obtained a promise from Queen Victoria that "the interests and welfare of the indigenous races in Africa will not be ignored." …

…　その前半期すなわち第2次世界大戦以前の時期には，運動はパン･アフリカ会議を主軸として展開された。まず1900年にトリニダードのアフリカ系人弁護士シルベスター･ウィリアムズHenry Sylvester‐Williamsの提唱で，パン･アフリカ会議Pan‐African Conferenceがロンドンで開催され，アフリカへの西欧植民地主義の侵略と人種的差別に対する抗議を，会議の名において行った。一般にこの会議の意義は，初めてアフリカ(系)人国際主義を組織化したこと，パン･アフリカという言葉を世に知らせたことなどであるとされているが，ビクトリア女王から〈アフリカにおける原住民諸人種の利益と福祉を無視しない〉との約束を得たことも注目されてよい。…
