Italian Catholic educator and founder of a religious order. Born into a poor farming family in the remote village of Becchi in Piedmont, he became a priest in 1841. He decided to dedicate himself to the Christian education of underprivileged young people, and in 1846 established a village for about 700 young people in Valdocco, a suburb of Turin. In order to expand this educational work worldwide, Bosco and his comrades founded the Salesian Society (Societas Sancti Francisci Salesii) on December 18, 1959, which was officially recognized by Pope Pius IX on March 1, 1968.

イタリアのカトリック教育家，修道会創立者。ピエモンテの寒村ベッキの貧しい農家に生まれ，1841年司祭になる。とくに不幸な青少年のキリスト教的教育に献身することを決意し，46年トリノ市郊外バルドッコにおよそ700人の青少年の村を設立した。この教育事業の世界拡大のために，ボスコは同志とともに59年12月18日サレジオ会Societas Sancti Francisci Salesiiを創立し，これをピウス9世は68年3月1日正式に認可した。
