1815‐88 Italian Catholic educator and founder of a religious order. Born into a poor farming family in the remote village of Becchi in Piedmont, he became a priest in 1841. He decided to dedicate himself to the Christian education of underprivileged young people, and in 1846 established a village for about 700 young people in Valdocco, a suburb of Turin. In order to expand this educational work worldwide, Bosco and his comrades founded the Salesian Society (Societas Sancti Francisci Salesii) on December 18, 1959, which was officially recognized by Pope Pius IX on March 1, 1968.
