An evergreen tall tree of the Pinaceae family, Abies genus, grows upright with a neat, conical crown, and, together with the Yezo spruce, is one of Hokkaido's representative conifers (illustration). It can reach a height of 35m and a diameter of 1m, with the bark of the trunk being grayish-white and smooth, but older trees have cracks. It has many resin sacs. The thick branches grow straight horizontally or diagonally upwards. The young branches are densely covered with short brown hairs. The needles are 15-30mm long and spiral. In May, purple-red female cones grow upright from the axils on the upper surface of the previous year's branches at the top of the crown, and male flowers grow downward from the axils of many leaves in the upper half of the previous year's branches.

円錐形の整然とした樹冠をなして直立するマツ科モミ属の常緑高木で，エゾマツとともに北海道を代表する針葉樹である（イラスト）。高さ35m，直径1mに達し，幹の樹皮は灰白色を呈し滑らかであるが，老木では割れ目を生じる。樹脂囊が多い。太枝は水平または斜め上方にまっすぐに伸びる。若枝には褐色の短毛を密生する。針葉は長さ15～30mmで螺生（らせい）する。5月ごろ樹冠上部の前年枝上面の葉腋（ようえき）から紫紅色の雌球花を直立し，前年枝上半部の多数の葉腋から雄花が下向きに出る。
