Microprogram - Microprogram (English spelling)

A program used to control electronic circuits that decode and execute computer instructions. Most modern computers have a microprocessor as the core of their processing functions. A program for a computer provides instructions on how to carry out the various calculations that the microprocessor has.

The various calculations that microprocessors have (such as the four arithmetic operations on integers) are realized by performing a number of basic calculations for each bit (the basic unit of digital information) in the appropriate order. Therefore, a method was developed to configure the microprocessor itself by preparing basic calculation circuits and small-scale control circuits, and incorporating their operating procedures in the form of a program. This program is called a microprogram.

The unit of instruction for a normal program is an instruction that corresponds to the operation of a microprocessor, whereas a microprogram is written to realize each individual instruction, and its unit is a microinstruction that specifies a more detailed operation.

コンピュータの命令の解読・実行を行う電子回路を制御するために用いられるプログラムをいう。現在のコンピュータの多くは、マイクロプロセッサーをその処理機能の中核としている。コンピュータに対するプログラムは、そのマイクロプロセッサーが備える各種演算を、どのような手順で行っていくかの指示を与えるものとなる。

　マイクロプロセッサーが備える各種の演算（整数の四則演算など）は、ビット（デジタル情報量の基本単位）ごとのいくつかの基本演算を、適切な順序に行うことで実現する。そこで、マイクロプロセッサー自身を構成するのに、基本演算回路と小規模制御回路を用意して、それらの動作手順をプログラムの形で与えて組み込む方式が生まれた。この際のプログラムを、マイクロプログラムという。

　通常のプログラムがその指示の単位とするのは、マイクロプロセッサーが備える演算に対応する命令である。一方マイクロプログラムは、その個々の命令を実現するために書かれるものであり、その単位はより微細な動作を指示するマイクロ命令となる。
