Cuesta - English spelling cuesta Spanish

A cuesta is an asymmetrical cross-sectional relief formed by the erosion of alternating layers of hard rock, which is resistant to erosion on land, and soft rock, which is less resistant. Cuesta is a Spanish word meaning a long slope, and has come to be used as a geomorphological term. The gently sloping backside of a cuesta is made of limestone, sandstone, or chalk, which is resistant to erosion, and the lower part of the front side is often exposed to mudstone or unconsolidated sand. The distance between the ridge and valley of a cuesta is restricted by the overlapping of the hard and soft rock layers, that is, by the geological structure. A typical cuesta topography developed between the Paris Basin and the middle reaches of the Rhine River, and is closely related to transportation routes and agriculture.
