A tourist destination in the north-central part of Colorado, USA. Population 329 (1980). It is located 42 km northwest of Denver, in the Front Range. The town was founded in 1859 following the discovery of gold mines, and prospered for a time, but fell into decline as gold production declined. The opera house was built in 1878, and an opera festival has been held every summer since 1932, which has become very popular. There are many tourist attractions, including gold mines and museums.
