…Although consumer cooperatives have continued to develop since then, other forms of movements have begun to grow around the turn of the 20th century, and in this respect America has been the most advanced country. In 1891, the Consumers' League was formed in New York City, which became the basis for the National Consumers' League in 1898, which actively promoted the improvement of food quality in particular, and this was the earliest example of a full-scale organization of a non-cooperative consumer movement. In 1929, the Consumers' Research Institute was established, which began to provide the results of its own product testing, and in 1936 it separated from it to form the Consumers' Union (CU), whose monthly product testing magazine Consumer Reports exceeded one million copies after World War II. …
