Japanese: 絵巻物 - えまきもの

These scrolls are primarily pictures depicting stories, biographies, and the origins of temples and shrines. They were produced from the Nara to Muromachi periods, and were primarily painted in the Yamato-e style. The general format is a combination of text and pictures in a single layer. Approximately 120 types and over 600 scrolls remain. Representative works include the "Past and Present Ingakyo Illustrated Scroll" from the Nara period, the "Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll," "Shigisan Engi Illustrated Scroll," and "Choju Giga" from the late Heian period, and the "Tale of Heiji Illustrated Scroll" and "Mongol Invasion Illustrated Scroll" from the Kamakura period.

奈良時代から室町時代にかけて制作され，おもに大和絵の画風で描かれた。詞書と絵の組合せを一段として展開させるのが一般的な形式。およそ120種600巻余が残る。代表作に，奈良時代の『過去現在因果経絵巻』，平安後期の『源氏物語絵巻』『信貴山 (しぎさん) 縁起絵巻』『鳥獣戯画』，鎌倉時代の『平治物語絵巻』『蒙古襲来絵巻』など。
