…French mathematician. Born in a small village in the French Alps, his father was a blacksmith. He was intelligent from his elementary school days, and with the help of an inspector, he was able to obtain a scholarship and receive higher education. He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in 1891, and in 1894 obtained his doctorate with his famous thesis that determined the structure of simple Lie algebras. After serving as professor at the universities of Montpellier, Lyon, and Nancy, he became a professor at the University of Paris in 1912, a position he held until 1940. With his almost mystical insight, he achieved groundbreaking results in many fields, including continuous group theory, partial differential equations, differential geometry, and theoretical physics, and played a pioneering role in the formation and development of analysis on manifolds, which is a central subject of mathematics today. …
