Born: August 27, 1865, Rockford [Died] December 2, 1935. New York. American archaeologist. He was particularly knowledgeable in Egyptology. While engaged in research as a professor at the University of Chicago, he was instrumental in the establishment of the university's Oriental Institute (1919), and was a leading figure in Egyptology in America. He is the author of such excellent works as A History of Egypt (1905), Ancient Records of Egypt (5 volumes, 1906), and Development of Religion and Thought in Ancient Egypt (1912), and is credited with originating the term "Fertile Crescent" as the cradle of civilization.
