Myoko Kogen is a hot spring resort located in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture, on the eastern foot of Mt. Myoko (2,446m). It consists of six hot springs, in descending order of altitude: Tsubame Onsen (earth-containing gypsum spring, 45°C) at about 1,100m, Seki Onsen (iron-containing salt spring, 46°C) at about 900m, Akakura Onsen (earth-containing bicarbonate spring, 60°C) at 700-800m, Ikenodaira Onsen (simple spring, 60°C) at 500-600m, and Myoko Onsen and Shin-Akakura Onsen (all of which draw water from Akakura Onsen). Seki Onsen, opened during the Kyoho era (1716-36), is the oldest, while Ikenodaira Onsen and Shin-Akakura Onsen, opened at the end of the Taisho era, are the newest.
