A long, narrow pile of sand or gravel that is separated from the coastline by a body of water. It is also called a coastal sand bar, coastal outer bar, or offshore bar. It is usually a long, narrow pile that runs parallel to the general direction of the coastline, but many are slightly curved in an arc. Coastal bars have gaps called tidal inlets in places, which allow the water of the bay or lagoon surrounded by the bar to be exchanged with the open ocean. Coastal bars are often formed on shallow coasts, and because they are sandy, they are prone to coastal erosion and the shoreline is prone to change. Coastal bars can be in a single row or in a group of several rows; the latter are wide and may have coastal dunes growing on top of them.
