… The translation of risei (rationality), along with the Buddhist terms risei (rationality) and dori (rationality), which indicate the true nature of things, was used for reason in the 1881 (Meiji 14) edition of the Tetsugaku Jiyo (Philosophy Vocabulary). (In 1870, Nishi Amane translated reason as the human-derived wisdom, and in 1886, Nakae Chomin translated the French raison as ryoshi (rationality).) The German word Vernunft was translated as chi (wisdom) by Nishi Amane in 1870, as ri (rationality) or dori (rationality) by Ariga Nagao in 1885, and as ri (rationality) by Seino Tsutomu in 1896. The Latin word ratio was translated as risei (rationality) by Kuwagi Gen'yoku in the 1890s, and the Greek word nous was translated as shisei (rationality) at the end of the 1900s, after being translated as banyu eiji (universal wisdom) in 1881 and shinrei (spirit) in the 1890s. …
