Seiwa Genji

Japanese: 清和源氏 - せいわげんじ

A clan that descended from Emperor Seiwa and took the name Minamoto. The descendants of Princes Sadakata, Sadamoto, Sadazumi, Sadakazu, and Sadazane were given the surname Minamoto, but only Prince Sadazumi's descendants prospered. Prince Sadazumi's eldest son Tsunemoto was given the surname Minamoto Ason in 961, and his sons Mitsunaka and Mitsumasa became Chinjufu Shogun. Mitsunaka settled in Tadasho, Settsu Province, and became a samurai. His sons Yorimitsu and Yorichika also became Chinjufu Shogun and gained fame as warriors. The rest of his descendants also established their status as samurai in various regions and became leaders of the samurai. In particular, Yoriyoshi and Yoshiie made outstanding contributions in the Battles of Zenkunen and Gosannen, establishing a base for the Minamoto clan in the eastern provinces. The power of the Minamoto clan declined under the Heike government, but after Yoritomo defeated the Heike clan and established the Kamakura shogunate, the power of the Minamoto clan increased again. The legitimate line of the Minamoto clan died out with Yoriie and Sanetomo, but their branches established themselves in various places and played an active role as samurai families. Among them, the Nitta clan, the Ashikaga clan, and the Takeda clan are famous.

清和天皇から出て源姓を名のった氏族。貞固，貞元，貞純，貞数，貞真の諸親王の子孫は源氏の姓を賜わったが，貞純親王の子孫のみが繁栄した。貞純親王の長子経基が応和1 (961) 年源朝臣の姓を賜わり，その子の満仲，満政らは鎮守府将軍となった。満仲は摂津国多田荘に土着して武士となり，その子の頼光，頼親も鎮守府将軍となって武名をあげ，その他の子孫も各地に割拠して武士としての地位を確立し，武士の棟梁となった。特に頼義，義家は，前九年の役，後三年の役で功績をあげ，東国に源氏の地盤を形成した。平氏政権下では勢力が衰退したが，頼朝が平氏を打倒して鎌倉幕府を樹立してから，再び勢力を伸張し，頼家，実朝で源家の正統は絶えたが，分流が各地に割拠し武家として活躍した。なかでも新田氏，足利氏，武田氏などは有名である。
