A collective name for three universities in the University of Lyon, France. University 1 focuses on medicine and natural sciences, while University 2 and University 3 focus on law, economics, social sciences, and humanities. There are approximately 65,000 students (as of 1996). As a key transportation hub, Lyon was a base for the penetration of Roman culture into Gaul, and was already known as a cultural center since Carolingian times. It was one of France's largest cities after Paris, but a university was not established before the French Revolution. In 1292, Pope Nicholas IV recognized the school of theology and law research in Lyon as a university, but due to the nearby University of Avignon, which was thriving, political conflicts, and the plague, it had almost no substance.
