paenula

Japanese: paenula
paenula

...This type of small cloak was passed down to the Germanic and Gaulish peoples. The cucullus used by the Gallic people and monks was derived from the Roman paenula, a round hooded cloak. From around the end of the 2nd century, a new type of tunic called the dalmatica appeared, with the body and sleeves cut in a straight line and large sleeves, and it would survive for a long time as Catholic ceremonial clothing.

From Rome

[Clothing]
Ancient Roman men wore a toga over the knee-length tunica, but the toga became unpopular because it was heavy and difficult to pleat, and emperors were forced to issue edicts ordering the wearing of togas at official events, and the Greek-style outer garment called the pallium came to be preferred instead of the toga. A sleeveless woolen cloak (paenula) was also popular for travel and rainy weather. During the Severan dynasty, the dalmatica, which developed from the sleeved tunica, became popular.
