Osorno (English spelling)

Osorno (English spelling)
A city in south-central Chile. It is located about 90 km south of Valdivia and 50 km inland from the Pacific coast, at the confluence of the Damas and Lahue rivers. It was founded by the Spaniards in 1553, but was often destroyed during wars with the indigenous Araucano Indians. It was rebuilt in 1796, and gradually developed after the mid-19th century with the influx of German immigrants. In 1895, the Trans-Chilean Railway, connecting Santiago and Puerto Montt, was opened through the city, and it escaped from its geographical isolation. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural and forestry areas, with industries such as dairy farming, flour milling, meat processing, beer, lumber, and wood processing. It is also a popular tourist base for the Chilean lakes and marshes that spread out in the foothills of the Andes to the east. At the fork in the road, the road that runs east crosses the border and leads to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina. Population: 117,444 (1992 estimate).
