...People of each position tried to defeat their opponents in the public forum by publishing their arguments in simple print form, and to expand their supporters. John Milton's Areopagitica (On Free Speech) was one such pamphlet, and it was from these "pamphleteers" that the editors of influential magazines and newspapers of the 18th century emerged. Daniel Defoe and Jonathan Swift were also originally proficient commentators who expanded their work into writing in order to move more people and more deeply.

...After that, pamphlets began to be used around the 15th century as a way to announce one's position when discussing religious issues, and gradually came to be used for propaganda purposes, mainly essays and articles on political and ideological issues.
