Yukinobu Kiyohara

Japanese:
Yukinobu Kiyohara
Years of birth: unknown. Painter of the early Edo period. Born to Kuni, the niece of Kano Tan'yū, and Kusumi Morikage, one of the four great masters of Tan'yū's school. Her name was Yuki. Her mother Kuni was born to Tan'yū's younger sister Nabe and Kandari Jōan (Morishune), one of the four great masters of Tan'yū's school. Thus, the blood ties between Yukinobu and Tan'yū are strong. Because of this relationship, Yukinobu is said to have married Hirano Ihei Morikiyo, a disciple of Tan'yū, from the Kiyohara clan, and lived in Kyoto, but there are other theories. She studied painting under Tan'yū and painted under the name Kiyohara Yukinobu. She was highly popular as the most prominent female painter in the Kano school, and many of her works were left behind. She modeled her style on Tan'yū's Yamato-e style lines, and showed a gentle style that added delicate brushstrokes unique to women. However, works that show Morikage-style ink usage, such as the "Flower and Bird Screen" (owned by Itabashi Art Museum), have been discovered in recent years, and it is necessary to reconsider her style. In the large Honma folding screens set on the upper level, the brushwork is rough and the composition is lacking, but there are excellent small pieces such as hanging scrolls. One excellent colored painting is "Flower and Bird Picture" (Tokyo National Museum), which approaches the texture of Intai flower and bird paintings.
