Oya

Japanese:
Oya

The former name of a town (Oya-cho) in Yabu-gun, northwest of Hyogo Prefecture. Currently, it is a district occupying the southwestern part of Yabu City. In 1955 (Showa 30), the four villages of Oya, Kuchi-Oya, Minamitani, and Nishitani merged to form a town, and Oya-cho was established. In 2004 (Heisei 16), it merged with the three towns of Yoka, Yabu, and Sekinomiya to form Yabu City (note that Yabu-gun disappeared as a result of this merger). The name of the former Oya-cho comes from Oya-go in the Wamyōshō, and the former town area was located in a deep valley upstream of the Oya-gawa River, a tributary of the Maruyama River. On the western border with Tottori Prefecture is Mt. Hyōnosen (1,510 meters), the highest point in Hyogo Prefecture. In addition to raising Tajima cattle and broilers, the area produces shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, and oysters. Akenobe Mine is an old mine that produced tin, zinc, copper, and other metals (the mine closed in 1987, and the site is now used as an educational facility). The Osugi Zanzako Dance is a type of drum dance and is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural asset. The Kuchioya Great Chinese Bemaki and Tarumi Great Cherry are national natural monuments. In addition, there is the Asian skunk cabbage park at Kabozaka Pass, which is the southwestern limit of Japan for the natural habitat of Asian skunk cabbage (a prefectural natural monument).
