Kanji input/output device

Terminal devices for inputting and outputting 2,000 or more kanji characters have fundamental technical and cost differences compared to terminal devices that handle the alphabet. It has become common practice to output kanji characters on television cathode ray tubes or memory cathode ray tubes as a matrix of dots of about 24 x 24 or 32 x 32. Printing on paper is also done using this type of dot display method. This method has the advantage of making it easy to create any character shape. In addition to the traditional keyboard method (in which several characters are stored on one key and selected using the shift key) that has been used for inputting characters, a method in which more than 2,000 characters are arranged on a tablet and selected from there, a kana-kanji conversion method, and various other methods have been put into practical use.

2000文字以上の漢字の入出力を行うための端末装置には，アルファベットを扱う端末装置と比べて根本的な技術上・価格上の差が生じる。漢字の出力はテレビジョンブラウン管または記憶型ブラウン管に，24×24 または 32×32 程度のマトリックス状の点表示で行うことが広く標準的になってきた。用紙への印刷もこの種の点表示方式で行う。この方式を用いると，任意の文字の形を容易につくることができるという利点がある。文字の入力については，従来用いられてきた鍵盤方式 (1つのキーに数文字を収容しておき，シフトキーによって選択するもの) のほかに，2000文字あまりをタブレット上に配置してそのなかから選択する方式，かな漢字変換方式その他各種の方式が実用化されている。
