…the term is used to refer to the influential Christian authors of the ancient and early medieval period who were recognized by the Church as the transmitters of the orthodox faith. The study of the writings and ideas of the Church Fathers is called patristics (patrology). The Greek word patēr and the Latin word pater both mean “father” and were honorifics for bishops in the ancient Church.
