A field of engineering that connects photons and electrons, optics and electronics. It came into the spotlight with the development of lasers in the early 1960s and the appearance of optical fiber in the 1970s, and because of its excellent multiplexing and high speed, research is being conducted on optical communications, optical computers, displays, etc. Optical elements used include LEDs (light-emitting diodes), light-receiving elements (photodiodes and phototransistors), modulation elements, and storage media.

光子と電子，光学とエレクトロニクスを結ぶ工学の一分野。1960年代初期のレーザーの開発，1970年代の光ファイバーの登場により脚光を浴び，多重性，高速性にすぐれているので，光通信，光計算機，ディスプレーなどの研究が行われている。使われる光素子としてはLED（発光ダイオード），受光素子（フォトダイオードやフォトトランジスター），変調素子，記憶媒体などがある。
