The word "emperor" was also called "Okimi" and "Sumera Mikoto." However, these two Japanese words are by no means synonymous, and focusing on the difference in quality between the two and the level in which they are used will be one way of approaching the historicity of the word "emperor." First of all, Okimi means "great lord," and Kimi was an ancient everyday honorific that is similar to "kami" (higher).
