Pisanello, Antonio

Pisanello, Antonio
Born: Around 1395, Pisa
[died] c.1455 Italian painter and medal engraver. His real name was Antonio Pisano, born to a Pisan father and a Veronese mother. He grew up in Verona and studied under the local painter S. Cevio, acquiring a Northern style of realism. In Venice he became assistant to G. Fabriano, working on the murals for the Palazzo Ducale. He later collaborated with Fabriano in Mantua (1424), Rome (31-33), and Verona. He was active in various parts of Italy, including Mantua and Milan (40), Venice, Ferrara, Rimini, Pavia, and Naples, and produced a wide range of works, including murals, panel paintings, and medals. His style was strongly influenced by the international Gothic style that was popular at the time, but it also combined a refined and detailed sensibility with a solid descriptive ability cultivated through tireless pursuit of realism, creating his own unique style. He left behind many outstanding works, including the murals "The Annunciation" (22-26, San Fermo, Verona), "The Legend of St. George" (c. 38, Sant'Anastasia, Verona), "Saint Eustace" (National Gallery, London), "Portrait of Lionello d'Este" (41/4, Carrara Academy, Bergamo), and "Portrait of Ginevra d'Este" (Louvre Museum). He also left behind many animal drawings based on meticulous observation, and was an outstanding medal maker.
