A representative oil wholesaler with ethnic capital. In 1911, Idemitsu Sazo (1885-1981) founded the oil sales company Idemitsu Shokai in Moji. In 1947, Idemitsu Shokai merged with its subsidiary Idemitsu Kosan, established in 1940. After World War II, Idemitsu built refineries in Tokuyama and Chiba. In 1953, Idemitsu purchased a large amount of oil from the Iranian government, which was in dispute with the UK over the nationalization of oil, and attracted international attention (the so-called "Nissho Maru Incident"). In September 2003, a fire occurred at the Hokkaido refinery due to the Tokachi-oki earthquake, causing extensive damage. Head office in Tokyo. An unlisted company, its capital had been kept at 1 billion yen for a long time, but in October 2006, it went public and was listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. 代表的な民族資本の石油元売会社。1911年出光佐三〔1885-1981〕が門司に石油販売業出光商会創業。出光商会は，1947年に1940年設立の子会社出光興産に合流。第２次大戦後徳山，千葉に製油所を建設。1953年には，石油国有化問題で英国と係争中であったイラン政府から大量に石油を買い付け，国際的な注目を浴びた（いわゆる〈日章丸事件〉）。2003年９月北海道製油所で十勝沖地震に伴う火災事故が発生，多大な被害を出した。本社東京。未上場企業で，資本金は長らく10億円に据え置かれていたが，2006年10月株式公開に踏み切り，東京証券取引所第一部に上場した。2011年資本金1086億円，2011年３月期売上高３兆6593億円。売上構成（％）は，石油製品81，石油化学製品14，石油開発２，石炭２，その他１。
