A reaction in which two groups bonded to a metal couple and then leave the metal, decreasing the formal oxidation number of the metal. For example, dialkyl transition metal compounds MR 2 L n (M = transition metal, R = alkyl group, L = ligand) are generally thermally unstable, and when this compound is heated, the two MR bonds are broken in the reaction shown in the following equation, and the two R groups may couple to produce RR. MR2Ln → MLn + RR This reaction is a typical example of a reductive elimination reaction, in which the transition metal M is formally divalent before the reaction but becomes zero-valent after the reaction. Other examples of reductive elimination reactions include those shown below. MH(COR) Ln → MLn + RCHO MH(R) Ln → MLn + RH The opposite of reductive elimination is oxidative addition, and many elementary reactions in catalytic reactions have come to be explained by oxidative addition and reductive elimination.
