A Book of Alliances was discovered in 1965-66 at a ritual site from the Eastern Zhou period on the eastern outskirts of Houma City, Shanxi Province, China. A Book of Alliances is a document that records the contents of an oath and is also called a Zaishu. Houma's Book of Alliances was written in red calligraphy on pieces of stone or jade, and of the more than 5,000 books of alliances found, 656 have identifiable characters. It will take some time to clarify the contents, but since it was discovered at a public ritual site in the capital of Jin, it is believed that the leader was the Duke of Jin, and that the alliance involved Zhao Yang, one of the Six Lords of Jin who later laid the foundations for the founding of the Zhao Dynasty, and that the period is estimated to be up to the middle of the 5th century BCE, during the late Spring and Autumn period.
