A former town in Yatsushiro County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Occupying the center of the Yatsushiro Plain, most of it is reclaimed land from the early modern period. Rice farming, greenhouse horticulture for vegetables, rush cultivation, and tatami surface manufacturing are thriving industries. It is the commercial center of northern Yatsushiro County, and has factories producing fertilizers, sewing, and other products. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the eastern part of the town. In August 2005, it was incorporated into Yatsushiro City along with the towns of Sendaicho, Sakamoto, Toyo, and Izumi in Yatsushiro County. 28.24 km2 . Population: 16,432 (2003). 熊本県中部,八代(やつしろ)郡の旧町。八代平野中央部を占め,大部分は近世の干拓地。米作,野菜などの施設園芸,イグサ栽培と畳表製造が盛ん。八代郡北部の商業中心地であり,肥料,縫製などの工場もある。東部に鹿児島本線が通じる。2005年8月八代郡千丁町,坂本村,東陽村,泉村と八代市へ編入。28.24km2。1万6432人(2003)。
