The founder of the Mito Tokugawa family in the early Edo period. His childhood name was Tsuruchiyo. He was the 11th son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and his mother was a concubine named Oman no Kata (Kageyama clan). He was born in Fushimi Castle, and in 1606 he was given 100,000 koku in Shimotsuma, Hitachi, and in 1614 he changed his stipend to 250,000 koku in Mito Castle and was given the rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Chamberlain, and Saemon no Kami. At that time, the shogunate appointed Nakayama Nobuyoshi (Bizen no Kami) as an attached elder retainer with 15,000 koku. Yorifusa's kokudaka was later increased to 280,000 koku, and his official rank was Shosho, Junior Fourth Rank, Lower when he accompanied Ieyasu to Kyoto in 1616, and in 1620 he was promoted to Councillor, and in 1626 he was promoted to Junior Third Rank, Provincial Chunagon, and the following year to Senior Third Rank. This third-rank Chunagon (the Chinese name for Chunagon was "Koumon") became the head of the Mito Tokugawa family. Yorifusa died in Edo in 1661. His eldest son, Yorishige, became the lord of Takamatsu Domain in Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture), and his second son, Mitsukuni, inherited the Mito Tokugawa family.

江戸前期,水戸徳川家の祖。幼名鶴千代。徳川家康の11男で,母は側室お万の方(蔭山氏)。伏見城で誕生,慶長11(1606)年に常陸下妻10万石を給され,同14年には下妻をあらため水戸城25万石,官位は従四位下侍従左衛門督となる。このおり幕府から付家老として中山信吉(備前守)が1万5000石をもって付けられた。頼房の石高はのち加増されて28万石,官位は同16年に家康に従って上洛したとき正四位下少将,元和6(1620)年に参議,寛永3(1626)年の後水尾天皇の二条城行幸に際して従三位権中納言に昇進し,翌年に正三位。この三位中納言(中納言の唐名が「黄門」)が水戸徳川家の家格となる。頼房は寛文1(1661)年に江戸で没。長男頼重は讃岐国(香川県)高松藩主となり,次男光圀が水戸徳川家を嗣いだ。<参考文献>斎藤桜淋『徳川頼房卿伝』
