Ponthiamas

...Connected to the Mekong River through the Vinh Tay Canal, it was once a key port city connecting the Gulf of Siam and Cambodia. In the past, it was known as Banteay Meas (called Ponthiamas by the Portuguese) in the Kingdom of Cambodia, but since the end of the 17th century, when a man named Maku-Kiu from Leizhou, Guangdong, China, was appointed governor of the Ha Tien region by the Cambodian king, Chinese people began to live here, and a semi-independent port city state headed by the Maku clan was established in the area from Phu Quoc Island offshore to the Ca Mau Peninsula in the south. Chinese historical documents refer to this as a port country or a base country. ...
