Open University (English spelling)

Japanese: オープン･ユニバーシティ（英語表記）Open University

An open university for adults that opened in the UK in 1971. By using television and radio broadcasts at home, combining study materials sent by post and schooling, and completing a set course, students can obtain a degree at the same level as at a regular university. It is called the Open University because university education is widely open to adults, and there are no particular entrance qualifications other than an age limit of 21 years or older. イギリスで1971年に開校した成人のための放送大学。家庭でテレビ，ラジオによる放送を利用し，それに郵送による教材の学習，スクーリング等を織り交ぜ，所定のコースを修了すれば，一般の大学と同レベルの学位が取得できる。大学教育を広く成人に開放し，21歳以上という年齢制限以外に特に入学資格を求めないため，オープン･ユニバーシティ(公開大学)と呼ばれている。学生数約6万5000(1981)。大学院もある。【水野国利】
