Offside fouls in soccer that are related to the offensive team's position and the rules that govern them. When a player passes the ball to a teammate in an offside position, or when a player in an offside position is in a position that blocks the goalkeeper's view, and is deemed to have been involved in a play that is advantageous to his teammate even if he has not directly touched the ball, the referee will determine that the offside position is applied. An offside position is a position that meets all three conditions: (1) being in the opponent's half, (2) being in front of the ball, or (3) being closer to the end line than the last player (last line of defense) of the opposing defense (excluding the goalkeeper). When an offside position is applied, the offensive team is awarded an indirect free kick from the position where the foul occurred as a penalty. Offside does not apply to throw-ins, goal kicks, or corner kicks. Also, it is not offside if an offensive player in an offside position takes and plays a back pass or a cleared ball (excluding balls that the goalkeeper cannot catch because they deflect or drop) made by a defensive player. However, the interpretation of what happens when a defending player touches the ball once was unclear internationally, and offside fouls were often called, so in 2013 FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) clarified the interpretation that it does not result in offside, notifying all national associations, and it came into effect in July of the same year.

サッカーにおける攻撃側のポジションに関する反則、及び、それを定めたルール。攻撃時に、選手がオフサイドポジションにいる味方へパスを出す、あるいは、オフサイドポジションにいる選手が相手ゴールキーパー(GK)の視界を遮る位置に立つなどして、直接ボールに触れていなくても味方に有利なプレーに関与したと見なされる場合、主審の判定によってオフサイドが適用される。オフサイドポジションとは、(1)相手陣内にいる、(2)ボールより前にいる、(3)相手ディフェンス(GKを除く)の最後尾の選手(ディフェンスの最終ライン)よりエンドラインに近い位置にいる、という3つの条件を全て満たした位置を指す。オフサイドが適用された場合、攻撃側のチームへのペナルティとして、相手チームに反則のあった位置から行う間接フリーキックが与えられる。なお、スローイン、ゴールキック、コーナーキックの場合、オフサイドは適用されない。また、守備側の選手が行ったバックパスやクリアボール(GKが弾いたり、こぼしたりして捕球できなかったボールは除く)をオフサイドポジションにいる攻撃側の選手が奪ってプレーしてもオフサイドにはならない。しかし、この守備側の選手が一度ボールに触れた場合の解釈が国際的にあいまいで、オフサイドの反則を取られることも多かったため、2013年にFIFA(国際サッカー連盟)がオフサイドにはならないとする解釈を明確化し、各国の協会に通知、同7月より適用されることになった。
