Japanese: ウミバト(海鳩) - ウミバト（英語表記）pigeon guillemot

A medium-sized bird of the Charadriiformes family (illustration) that resembles a guillemot. It breeds in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Chukot Peninsula, the Kuril Islands, the Aleut Islands, and the northwest coast of North America, and migrates slightly south in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but in small numbers, and is mainly seen in the seas of northern Japan. It is about 33 cm long, and in its summer plumage it is dark gray-black all over, with white tarantulas with two black lines. It has a thin, pointed black beak and red legs. In its winter plumage the upper surface of the body is gray-black-brown, the wings are gray-black, the tarantulas are white with two black lines, and the underside of the body is a dirty white with fine brown horizontal stripes.

ケイマフリに似た中型のチドリ目ウミスズメ科の鳥（イラスト）。カムチャツカ半島，チュコート半島，千島列島，アレウト列島，北アメリカ大陸北西海岸などで繁殖し，冬はやや南下する。日本には冬鳥として渡来するが数は少なく，おもに北日本の海上に見られる。全長約33cm，夏羽では全体が暗灰黒色で，雨覆いは白くて2本の黒線がある。くちばしは細くて先がとがり黒色，脚は赤色。冬羽では体の上面は灰黒褐色，翼は灰黒色で雨覆いは白くて2本の黒線があり，体の下面は汚白色の地に褐色の細かい横斑がある。
