A reflex phenomenon in which stimulation of nerves or receptors automatically causes the dilation of the arterioles in the vascular beds throughout the body, especially in the internal organs (kidneys, spleen, etc.), via the cardio-vasomotor center, resulting in a decrease in arterial blood pressure. This reflex was first discovered in 1866 when Zion IFTsion and C. Ludwig stimulated the aortic nerve, resulting in a decrease in heart rate and low blood pressure, and for this reason the aortic nerve is also known as the decompression nerve. A similar reflex can also be caused by electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerve. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
