A general term for birds in the Casuariidae family of the order Ostrich (or Casuariidae). This family includes one genus and three species: the Great Cassowary, the Papuan Cassowary, and the Lesser Cassowary. The Great Cassowary is sometimes simply called the Casuariidae. It is one of the large ratites. The Great Cassowary can reach a head height of 1.8m and a weight of 85kg, making it the second heaviest living bird after the ostrich. At first glance it resembles an emu, but cassowaries have a horny helmet-like projection on their heads. Their feathers are stiff and hairy like those of an emu, their wings are degenerate, and their flight feathers are only shafts and have no flap.
