Butlerov

Russian chemist. He studied chemistry under CE Claus and NN Zinin at Kazan University from 1844 to 1849. He became a professor of chemistry at Kazan University in 1857 and at St. Petersburg University in 1868. In 1874 he became a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He became interested in chemical theory from around 1854, and during his stay in Western Europe from 1857 to 1858 he became acquainted with many chemists and learned the latest organic chemistry theories. In 1861 he proposed the concept of "chemical structure," which is a molecular structure obtained by chemical methods, and experimentally verified the theory of organic structure. He also discovered formose in his research on the polymerization and condensation reactions of formaldehyde. His organic chemistry textbook (Russian version from 1864 to 1866, German version from 1867 to 1868) was one of the first systematic textbooks based on the theory of organic structure. He trained many disciples and also made an effort to promote higher education for women. He was also interested in psychic phenomena and was involved in beekeeping.

ロシアの化学者．1844～1849年カザン大学でC.E. Claus(クラウス)とN.N. Zinin(ジーニン)に化学を学んだ．1857年カザン大学化学教授，1868年サンクトペテルブルク大学化学教授を歴任．1874年サンクトペテルブルク科学アカデミー正会員となる．1854年ころから化学理論に関心をもち，とくに1857～1858年の西欧滞在で多くの化学者たちと知り合い，最新の有機化学理論を身につけた．1861年には，化学的方法によって得られる分子構造である“化学構造”の概念を提唱し，有機構造論の実験的検証を行った．また，ホルムアルデヒドの重・縮合反応の研究でホルモースを見いだした．かれの有機化学教科書(1864～1866年ロシア語版，1867～1868年ドイツ語版)は，有機構造論にもとづく最初の体系的教科書の一つ．多くの弟子を育て，また女子の高等教育にも努力した．心霊現象にも関心をもち，また養蜂業にも携わった．
